My name is Robert Kiyosaki and you may have seen me as a featured guest with media outlets in every corner of the world like FOX News, CNN, the BBC, Oprah and hundreds of others.

I have been incredibly fortunate to achieve tremendous success as an acclaimed personal finance educator… become a multi-millionaire through real estate investing and business building… and written my way onto the New York Times best-sellers list starting with Rich Dad Poor Dad.

But…

… none of these things happened because I am a financial genius or business visionary. And no, I didn’t become a best-selling author because I’m a gifted writer (I actually failed writing class in high school… twice!).

I owe my success to the lessons I learned from my first financial coach—my rich dad.

Starting at nine years old, my rich dad (my best friend Mike’s father) would play the board game Monopoly with us for hours. I didn’t know it at the time but we weren’t just having fun playing a game. My rich dad was teaching us the basics of business and investing.

Thankfully, his mentorship didn’t stop there. My rich dad provided feedback, accountability, and encouragement throughout my life.

However, contrary to what many people think, my rich dad didn’t tell me what to do. He didn’t hold my hand and lead me into the promised land. Instead, he told me how to think.

Think… Then Grow Rich

My first business, manufacturing nylon-and-Velcro wallets, took me to levels of success I never imagined could be possible. But with that success came additional problems.

For example, it was 1979 and I had nothing but problems with my wallet business. I had trust issues with my partners, competitors breathing down our necks, and cash flow problems—namely, there wasn’t any coming in. So, I schedule a meeting with my rich dad.

On the day of the meeting I walked into his office and showed him my company’s financial statement. Looking at the document, rich dad shook his head in disgust and said, “Your company has financial cancer, and I’m afraid it’s terminal. You boys have mismanaged what could have grown into a rich and powerful company.”

Line-by-line rich dad ripped apart our financials. In our arrogance, we had let success blind us to how to successfully run a company. Within minutes, rich dad pointed out how we were unable to pay our employees, including payroll taxes to the government. Our cash position was completely bare and we owed money to our suppliers in order to keep up with production.

Within minutes of looking at our financial statement, my rich dad had completely—and accurately—assessed the truth of our failing business.

“Look, why don’t you just face the truth? You and the three clowns you call partners have mismanaged your business. You don’t know what you’re doing, you’re incompetent, and worst of all, you don’t have the guts to admit any of this. You guys are pretending to look like businesspeople, but when I look at your financials, you boys are either crooks or clowns. I hope you’re clowns, but if you don’t make some changes, you clowns will become crooks.” - Rich dad

Rich Dad’s Business Coaching

My rich dad was right. My partners and I were amateurs. We let our meteoric rise to success cloud our ability to make smart business decisions. We weren’t business owners, we were kids who fell into success.

Instead of managing our cash-flow, we were concerned about what sports car to buy. Instead of analyzing how our competition could (and eventually did!) destroy us, we were focused on chasing girls.

It took the real-world business coaching from my rich dad to help me finally understand what I was doing wrong. Within months of meeting with my rich dad we were able to turn things around.

Unfortunately, however, our surfer wallet business failed. One of my partners took off with the only money we had remaining and I was left almost one-million dollars in debt which took me years to pay back. (It turns out my rich dad wasn’t wrong calling us crooks.)

As I look back, I wonder whether the struggles were worth it. Sometimes, I think yes.

But, would I have done it the same way knowing what I know now? No!

See, my biggest take away from this entire experience was that professionals have coaches, amateurs do not.

This is true about everything in life. From athletes to business owners and from relationships to personal finances, professionals understand that they don’t know what they don’t know.

Even to this day, with all of my success, I work with coaches in all areas of life—mental, physical, emotional and spiritual.
